Good Fit Books

Finding "good fit" books is critical to your child's reading development.  If the book is too easy (below the child's independent reading level), he/she will not be challenged enough to grow in his/her reading skills.  If the book is too difficult (at a frustration level), the child will spend too much time and effort trying to sound out the words instead of focusing on comprehension.  When books are too easy or too hard, children can loose motivation to read.
A book is considered a "good fit" if the child can pronounce 90% of the words and can comprehend 90% of the content.  See the 5 Finger Rule below to help choose a "good fit" book.
